Scottish Power to pull out of Falkirk

Around 100 jobs will be lost to Falkirk when ScottishPower pulls out of the town.

The energy firm has announced it will close the customer service centre in Camelon when a planned new headquarters opens in Glasgow in 2015.

A spokesman for the company said there would be an option for staff to move to either the city or other offices in Hamilton.

But there are concerns that not everyone will want to relocate and many will end up on the dole.

Falkirk Council officials have revealed that they have been in talks with the energy giant over the future of the Glasgow Road site and the local employees for the last 18 months.

With ScottishPower announcing the project to build a new 14-storey headquarters to house 15000 staff will go ahead, the local authority has vowed to step up its efforts to safeguard the staff affected and find a suitable use for the land.

Councillor Dennis Goldie, convener of the economic strategy and development committee, said: “It is a very real concern that 100 jobs are going. Although staff will be given the opportunity to transfer, there are those for whom this will not be suitable.

“I believe it is also very important that we get a productive use for this site
